Vasana to 'leave once all senators endorsed'

Election Commission chairman Vasana Puemlarp said yesterday he would quit his post after the agency completed endorsing all successful candidates in the April 19 Senate election.
It was the first time the embattled EC chief had given any indication of a time frame about his possible departure in the wake of mounting pressure for the remaining election commissioners to step down. In an interview with a local news agency, Vasana did not specify precisely when he would quit. The three remaining commissioners have been accused of acting in favour of the Thai Rak Thai Party over the April snap election. The EC chief said he would leave his post before a royal decree setting the next election comes into effect to avoid criticism that he had abandoned his responsibilities. The next general election has been tentatively scheduled for October 15 and the government is expected to seek a royal decree announcing the election by August.
