Avoid rallies, Chaisit says

Opponents of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra should give him a second chance to prove his leadership rather than try to dethrone him by staging street protests, a former senior military officer said yesterday
"Thaksin has done nothing wrong and always plays by the rules, so there is no justification for driving him out of office," General Chaisit Shinawatra said yesterday. Chaisit, a cousin of Thaksin, said the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) should not resume its street protests next month. "For the sake of social peace, there should be no more street protests," he said, urging Thaksin's opponents to settle their complaints in court. Commenting on PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang's call for a military take-over, he said the demand was out of touch with the times. He said no one should try to derail the new poll. Defence Ministry Permanent Secretary General Sirichai Thanyasiri said the PAD should uphold the law when airing its opinions.
