Govt to check report

Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon has asked the Thai embassy in Tokyo to verify a report by a Japanese magazine that four Thai women were sent to "entertain" leaders in North Korea 24 years ago.

Kantathi expressed concern about the reports, but said he needed more information about the women, ministry spokesman Kitti Wasinondh said.

Japanese weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun reported this week that four Thai women, who apparently worked in Tokyo's Ginza district, were lured to a job in Pyongyang in 1982 "servicing the North Korean elite".

The Thai embassy in Tokyo would contact the magazine - and women who claim to be victims - to learn more about the incident, Kitti said.

The women were sent to Pyongyang four years after Anocha Panjoy, from Chiang Mai, was reportedly abducted.
