Govt 'must do more on economy'

The caretaker government has a responsibility to tackle the deteriorating economic climate caused by fallout from the political turbulence earlier this year, Democrat Party spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon said yesterday.
He said people are worried about political problems including uncertainty over the prospect of holding a general election on October 15. People are beginning to lose trust in the Election Commission after the April 2 election was ruled invalid, he said. He said people had also lost confidence in independent organisations after the Constitution Court rejected a petition by 35 senators asking it to consider disqualifying the three remaining election commissioners. More people have reservations about the government's ability to resolve economic problems such as rising consumer prices as a result of higher inflation, he said. Businesses at all levels are struggling with high taxation, he said. Bancha Khaengkhan The Nation
