Her Majesty undergoes surgery in right eye

Her Majesty the Queen yesterday underwent eye surgery to treat a minor condition in the retina of her right eye, according to a Royal Household Bureau statement.
Doctors discovered a tiny tear in the retina when Her Majesty visited the Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok on June 15 as part of her annual medical check-up, the statement dated June 24 said. The tear, however, did not effect the Queen's vision, the statement said. A team of the hospital's ophthalmologists specialising in retinal diseases recommended an "urgent" corrective surgery to prevent further damage to the eye, which could occur if the retina was left untreated, the Royal Household Bureau said. In addition to the retinal surgery, the surgical team, which was set up specially to treat the Queen, was to also treat a cataract in the same eye. The doctors planned to use ultrasound to get rid of the cataract and implant a lens. Doctors said the Queen might need to take about six weeks of rest to fully recover from the surgery, which was held at the hospital late yesterday afternoon.
