Radio to tip off on weather situation

People living in areas of the North vulnerable to landslides and floods will be warned about possible danger by a government radio station.

The Public Relations Office, Region 3, has signed an agreement with the Department of Mineral Resources to serve as a medium to spread warning messages to people in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Nan and Phayao.

The radio station broadcasts at AM 1476 KHz in seven ethnic languages: Hmong, Yao, Lisu, Lahu, Karen, Akha and Thai Yai.

Somsak Potisat, director-general of the Department of Mineral Resources, said: "A great number of hill tribes

live in areas at risk of landslide and flood. This radio station will inform them of the impending danger so that they can prepare to escape or otherwise cope."

The agreement was signed by Somsak and Somjai Sasomsap, a director of the Public Relations Office Region 3, in Chiang Mai.

The scheme will eventually be extended to other regions of Thailand.
