Voters look forward to new era

The demise of a major party or the current Election Commission could transform the political landscape, now mired in chaos, the Abac Poll Research Centre said yesterday
Fifty-nine per cent of the 2,168 respondents in Abac's latest poll looked forward to a new era in the country's democratic development after the dissolution of the dominant party, referring to the Thai Rak Thai. Some 23 per cent said the Election Commission might step aside to facilitate a resolution to the political crisis. The remaining 18 per cent pinned their hopes on a confluence of events, such as a military coup, a new election, the departure of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, or the improved performance of independent organisations. The opinion survey was conducted between June 10 and Thursday in 14 provinces. Asked about concerns triggered by the ongoing political uncertainty, almost 82 per cent said they worried about corruption as politicians might try to recoup their expenses from vote-buying. Other concerns include the economy, the illicit drug problem and the southern violence.
