Senate heads for row on EC motion

The Senate looks set for a stormy session on Monday if Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua allows a motion to nominate two members of the Election Commission (EC) to be tabled, one senator warned yesterday.
"If this matter is raised during the meeting, there will be a series of protests. Many senators disagree with it," caretaker Senator Wallop Tangkananurak said. "I will be among the protesters. Suchon should have security guards ready to carry me out of the chamber," he said. The Senate speaker said that while the upper house would discuss three topics, appointing the screening panel for the National Counter Corruption Commission candidates, nominating Administrative Court judges as Constitution Court judges, and nominating other judges, he did not rule out other topics. The Senate is to convene an extraordinary session from Monday to Wednesday. "We have to see if other motions tabled during the session are involved with the meeting's agendas," Suchon said. Wallop said his colleague Prakiat Nasimma had submitted an urgent motion for the special session to nominate two EC commissioners to fill the vacant seats. Wallop said Prakiat might feel confident that most senators would back his motion, but that it was not right for the Senate to consider the matter because only the Constitution Court could make the decision and the issue was being widely debated. The Senate panel screening motions must decide first if the motion can be tabled. Wallop said that to prevent turmoil in the Senate, Prakiat must withdraw the motion and Suchon must let the Senate panel decide if it was legal to submit it. "It is most inappropriate to take advantage of the situation to nominate EC commissioners," he said.
