Australian shooting victim dies

Australian nurse Pam Fitzpatrick has died of the injuries she received in a drive-by shooting in Kanchanaburi early on Monday.
The 26-year-old from Brisbane was shot by unknown assailants as she and her sister sat in a bar watching a World Cup football match. A statement from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade yesterday said it "regrets to confirm Pam Fitzpatrick passed away on the 21st of June as a result of injuries sustained in a shooting incident on the 19th of June". Consular officers in Bangkok were providing support to the Fitzpatrick family. The Australian Ambassador to Thailand, Bill Paterson, has spoken with senior police to register the Australian government's strong "interest" in the investigation. Fitzpatrick is the latest victim in what is believed to have been a spate of shootings by drunken teenagers this year that has left five others dead in Kanchanaburi, a senior police officer was quoted telling one Australian newspaper. Police said the shooting may have been another brazen act of violence by bored teenagers either showing off or drunk. Fitzpatrick was shot in the back of the neck. She slipped into a coma and was placed on a life-support system after being transported to Samitivej Hospital on Tuesday.
