Samak and Dusit settle dispute

The libel case filed by television hosts Samak Sundaravej and Dusit Siriwan against a talk show personality and the Thai Post newspaper has been mediated with the newspaper agreeing to publish the hosts' explanation about their role, a lawyer said yesterday.

Chairat Sanengarun, who represents talk show personality Prasarn Maruekapitak, said after a Criminal Court arbitration that Thai Post had agreed to publish an article by Samak explaining the allegations against the show hosts.

Moreover, Prasarn and Thai Post would have to publish another article explaining the dispute.

With the two articles published, senator-elect Samak would withdraw the other criminal and civil cases involving Prasarn and Thai Post - for which he was demanding Bt80 million in compensation, he said.

The court appointed both sides to approve the details of the articles and sign an agreement involving an out-of-court settlement (brokered by the court) on July 12.

Samak and Dusit filed the case against Prasarn, Thai Post and its editor for Prasarn's article on October 4 last year criticising the hosts' role in publicising information about the restive southern provinces and the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC).
