Big banquet for King

The government is awaiting royal approval to hold a dinner banquet in honour of His Majesty the King, who is celebrating his 60th year on the throne.
The grand banquet is to be held as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations."We are waiting for His Majesty to decide on the date of this special banquet," caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said yesterday. Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had already sent an invitation to His Majesty requesting his presence at the special event, Wissanu said. The Royal Household Bureau earlier told the government the banquet could be held after June 9, Wissanu said. He expressed hope His Majesty would grant a response when he was available. Wissanu said the government also planned to present a commemorative conch to His Majesty on this auspicious occasion and would present Bt1 billion to His Majesty for use by the Ananda Mahidol Foundation. His Majesty established the foundation as a tribute to his late brother, King Ananda Mahidol. The foundation has granted scholarships to many students over the past several decades.
