Uni chiefs vote to keep system 'for continuity'
The University Presidents' Council of Thailand yesterday voted to continue the current admission system in the next school year, its chairman Professor Dr Pratya Vesarach said.
Despite calls for change after flawed Ordinary National Education Test (O-Net) and Advanced National Education Test (A-Net) scores were found and widely publicised, the council voted to retain the system for the sake of continuity so that students would not be confused by any changes, the council chief said. Pratya said the system would next year give 10-per-cent weighting to the cumulative grade from three years in high school (GPAX), 20 per cent to grade point average (GPA), 35-70 per cent to O-Net scores and 0-35 per cent to scores achieved via A-Net. The council also assigned a working team, led by Mahidol University president Pornchai Matangkasombut, to set guidelines to prevent mistakes in the 2007 university admissions system. Pratya said there was a possibility that the council would in the future be in charge of the whole admission system, from applications through answer sheets to announcement of results. "Most university presidents agreed that universities should take responsibility, not just leave it to the Higher Education Commission and the National Institute of Education Testing Services," he said.
