NTC campaign delay

Private telecom operators are concerned that the National Telecommunications Commission is unprepared to publicise the introduction of the new mobile-phone numbering plan slated to start in September.

Representatives of private telecom operators said after a meeting with the NTC yesterday that the numbering plan would confuse people if they were not well prepared and informed of the change.

The NTC has yet to finalise a budget for the campaign even though the plan will start on a trial basis next month. In September the full-fledged official use is scheduled to start.

Many years ago TOT Plc spent about Bt30 million publicising the fact that all fixed-line phone numbers were to be changed from seven digits to the present nine digits.

After the introduction of the new numbering plan, all mobile-phone numbers will have 10 digits with the prefix 08, while fixed-line telephone numbers will remain unchanged for now.

Direk Charoenphol, chairman of the NTC's numbering plan committee, said all fixed-line numbers would be changed to 10 digits after the country fully adopted Voice Over Internet Protocol technology, a trend sweeping the world.

The technology uses the Internet to deliver both voice and data services.
