Party head-count urged

The Election Commission yesterday met with representatives of 28 political parties in a bid to solve the problem of duplicate membership.

Of 24.9 million registered party members, 5.3 million are members of more than one party, said EC deputy secretary-general Pokkrong Suthornsut.

Pokkrong called on the political parties to check past records of members, attract new members on a voluntary basis instead of trying to inflate the numbers, and regularly update their membership records.

The meeting resolved that each party would verify and update membership records by July 15, well ahead of the new election.

Although Election Commission chairman Vasana Puemlarp presided over the meeting, he refused to talk to reporters afterwards.
