Court gags ex-TRT MPs

Two former Thai Rak Thai MPs reported to the Administrative Court yesterday to defend themselves against allegations of contempt of court.
Early last month the pair threatened to campaign for the impeachment of the court's judges if they declared the April 2 election results null and void. Sophon Phetsawang and Buasorn Prachamon refused to comment yesterday after attending court for more than two hours. "Today I won't speak about anything," Sophon said. Buasorn said he was not concerned if the outcome landed him in trouble, because he had told the court the truth. He said the court had prohibited former MPs from commenting on the issue before it ruled to prevent confusing the public. Shortly before attending the session, Sophon said he would accept the court's ruling, no matter what it was. The two TRT members will report to the court again on Wednesday. In early May, Sophon and Buasorn led a group of TRT MPs to challenge the court, which vowed to nullify the April 2 election, following His Majesty the King's intervention to relieve an ongoing political crisis. They said the court had no authority to overrule the Election Commission, which said the poll was legal. However, they backed down from their threat to take action against the judges after being warned of the ramifications of undermining the court.
