East Asian meet starts

The World Economic Forum on East Asia, the first WEF regional meeting to be held in Japan, takes place in Tokyo today and tomorrow with more than 300 global leaders from business, politics, government, academia, civil society and the media from 27 countries participating.

The meeting is being held in partnership with Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives), the WEF said in a statement.

The overall theme is "Creating a new agenda for Asian integration".

The co-chairs are Hassan Marican, president and chief executive officer, Petronas, Malaysia; Henry McKinnell, chairman and chief executive officer, Pfizer, United States; Kunio Nakamura, president, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, Japan; Nandan Nilekani, president, CEO and managing director, Infosys Technologies, India; Sir Martin Sorrell, group chief executive, WPP, United Kingdom; Junichi Ujiie, chairman, Nomura Holdings, Japan; and Yun Jong-Yong, vice-chairman and CEO, Samsung Electronics, Republic of Korea.

In addition to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, there is strong engagement from Japan's policy-makers, including Toshihiko Fukui, Bank of Japan governor; Yuriko Koike, environment minister; Toshihiro Nikai, economy, trade and industry minister; and Sadakazu Tanigaki, finance minister.

"Much more communication is needed to ensure Asia's future growth and stability and so it is very important that Japan's business and political leaders engage in candid and informal discussions with their peers from the region," said Keizai Doyukai vice-chairman and president Kunio Kojima.
