Weerapat's on a roll

[TENNIS] Thailand's Weerapat Doakmaiklee continued his fine run into week two of the US$10,000 LTAT Bangkok Open Men's Futures 2 tournament after a three-set first round win at the Tennis Academy of Asia in Bangkok yesterday.

Weerapat, who turns 19 today, outlasted American David To 6-4 3-6 6-4 for a spot in the second round where he will take on either second-seeded Yu Xin Yuan of China or Miles Armstrong of Australia.

Weerapat reached his first ITF semi-final last week before losing to Australian Lester Cook 6-1 6-2.

German-Thai Philipp Piyamongkol caused the biggest upset of the day, knocking out top seed Wang Yu of China 7-5 6-1.

Fourth-seeded Stephen Michell of South Africa escaped an upset by eliminating China's Zhen Shao-xuan 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-3 and sixth-seeded Kim Hyung-kwon of South Korea vanquished wild card holder Harshana Godamamma of Sri Lanka 6-3 6-0.

In the other first round match, Nam Hyun-woo of South Korea dispatched India's Vishnuvardhan 6-4 6-4.

Two other Thais, Peerakit Siributwong and Kittipong Wachiramanowong, are to play their first round matches today.
