ELECTION COMMISSION: Sec-gen seeks pay rise for himself

The secretary-general of the Election Commission (EC) has, for the second time this year, proposed a pay rise for himself.

Pol Maj-General Aekachai Warunprapha's previous request for a pay rise was made in January.

The latest request was made on June 1, while attention was focussed on abuse of power charges against the three commissioners. Aekachai is apparently seeking a 10-per-cent rise and is also asking for the increase to be backdated to April last year.

The rise is pending a study by the EC to determine whether such a request is in accordance with the organisation's regulations.

Some critics say that since Aekachai's tenure is contractual in nature - lasting five years - and not that of a permanent employee, it will be for the controversial commissioners to consider the matter by themselves. - The Nation.
