Brief evacuation at airport

Passengers and staff were evacuated from Terminal One at Don Muang airport yesterday following an incident when smoke was seen coming from air-conditioning vents.
Airport authorities, however, were quick to play down the incident, saying it stemmed from faulty lighting and that no one was in any danger. The incident was brought under control in 30 minutes, a senior official said. "Passengers and personnel were safely evacuated, and there was a report of slight damage caused by light bulbs that had short-circuited," said Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya. Chotisak dismissed speculation that a fire had broken out inside the terminal. Smoke started to spread via air-conditioning ducts from the airport's immigration office due to the melting of light-bulb sockets, immigration chief Maj-General Chakthip Chaichinda said. Caretaker Deputy Transport Minister Phumtham Wechayachai instructed authorities to check safety measures at the airport following the incident.
