Kantana animated over 'Kan Kluay' ticket sales

Last night, the producers and distributors of "Kan Kluay", the first Thai 3D animated film, threw a lavish bash in anticipation of the movie soon raking in Bt100 million in ticket sales.
A source with the Kantana Group, which produced the Bt150-million film, said that as of Sunday, ticket sales had reached Bt70 million."We are certain we'll reach the Bt100-million mark soon," he said. "Kan Kluay" is a surprise blockbuster, as it took off at a slow pace after its premier, which coincided with Thai theatres showing the Hollywood film "The Da Vinci Code". The Kantana Group hopes the cost of production will be covered by proceeds from the sale of the film in foreign markets. Saha Mongkol International is now handling the marketing. Chomsajee Techaratanaprasert, the distributor's marketing director, said there was substantial interest from Europe and the US in the film. "But we are not yet finalising the proceeds," he said. "The final figures should be wrapped up a month from now." Saha Mongkol International began distributing Thai films abroad following the success of its "Ong Bak" and "Tom Yum Goong". The latter film reaped total sales of US$8 million (Bt308 million) from non-Asian markets. In producing the animated film, Kantana had high hopes of showing Thai history to the world through the life of Kan Kluay - the elephant of King Naresuan the Great, who reigned during the Ayutthaya era.
