Awards for Thailand's best

HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana received the award for the best women's team, while weightlifting world champion Pawina Thongsuk and World University Games gold medallist Patiwat Tongsalap took home the best amateur athlete titles at the 2005 Best Athlete Day yesterday.
The Princess was a member of Thailand's badminton squad which beat Singapore 3-2 in the SEA Games final and won the country's first gold medal in the sport for 20 years. She was presented with the award by Olympic Committee of Thailand president Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapha. The annual awards were held by the Sport Writers Association of Thailand at the Miracle Grand Hotel in Bangkok yesterday. While the best female amateur athlete award went to favourite Pawina - the first woman weightlifter in a century to shatter world records in three different weight division - the best male amateur athlete award caused a shock when it was handed to Patiwat, the first Thai to win a gold medal at the University Games in Turkey last year. Both won trophies generously donated by His Majesty the King. World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Somsak Sithchatchawal won the best professional athlete award while taekwando expert Chatchawal Khawla-or and weightlifter Suda Chaleephay were the best junior male and female athletes.
