'Righteous' Pachara

Attorney General Pachara Yuthithamdamrong has been thrust into the spotlight after receiving investigation files from the Election Commission that effectively make him the key man who will decide the fate of the Thai Rak Thai Party.

Pachara's name is a familiar one because, for two terms, he was an appointed Senator, and while in that office he played a significant role. Among his close friends are Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua, Poonsak Wannapong and Admiral Kohlak Charoenruk.

Pachara has close ties with Suchon. When the Constitution stipulated that senators had to be elected, Pachara chose not to seek election and returned to work as an attorney. But his relationship with Suchon continued, and when Suchon became Senate speaker, he appointed Pachara as his adviser.

Pachara, 58, rose to become attorney general last year amid criticism that he leapfrogged Prapan Naiyakowit and Chaikasem Nitisiri, who were senior to him.

Pachara dismissed the criticism, saying the two attorneys attracted fewer than half the votes of the State Attorney Commission for their nominations to the attorney general post. After they failed to secure the nomination, his name was proposed and he received more than half the votes of a quorum of the commission.

Pachara's principle in life is self-sufficiency.

"If we learn to be satisfied, or feel that what we have is enough, all problems end," he said.

"Do not think that, as attorney general, you have to live a more luxurious life than others,'' he said.

His motto is: Health is ours, our children are our assets, the country belongs to the public.

His work principle: Stick to righteousness.

"Even though the defendants are powerful politicians, they cannot force or pressure us. We will not succumb to them because we have to uphold our institutions. Politicians come and go. Our institutions have lived for hundreds of years," he said.
