Two soldiers killed in Yala

A bomb blast and an ambush killed two soldiers yesterday as the violence continued unabated in the deep South.

In Bannang Sata district of Yala, Sergeant-Major Jarewat Khamnoey, 45, and Private Mongkhon Prasuk, 21, were found dead on the roadside in Soi Muang village yesterday afternoon.

Investigating officials said that the two soldiers, who had been assigned to escort teachers, were riding a motorcycle to pick up teachers at Nikompattana 13 School, when an unknown number of suspected Muslim militants set off an explosive device and ambushed the two with automatic weapons. The militants also placed spikes on the road connecting Krong Pinang and Bannang Sata to delay any assistance to the two soldiers. - The Nation, Yala
