Funeral for former MP Chuwong begins

A funeral for former Chat Thai party-list MP Chuwong Chayabutr, who succumbed to kidney disease at Chulalongkorn Hospital on Monday, began at Wat Thepsirintharawas in Bangkok yesterday.
Born in 1937, Chuwong obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from Chulalongkorn University (CU)'s Faculty of Political Science. He also earned a Master of Science (Economics) from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a doctorate in political science from Exeter University. In 1965, he started his career as a lecturer at his alma mater, the CU Faculty of Political Science. Later, he took a position at the Local Administration Department. He served as Muang Samut Prakan district chief before climbing the ladder of officialdom and becoming governor of several provinces. Before his retirement, Chuwong served as permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry. In 1992, he was appointed a senator. His political career began with his becoming an MP candidate on the Chat Thai party list in an election two years ago. After taking seventh place on the list, he succeeded another Chat Thai member as an MP after that member joined the Cabinet. By law, a person who joins the Cabinet automatically gives up his or her seat in Parliament.
