Flood-relief package totals Bt2.4 billion

The Cabinet yesterday approved a Bt2.4-billion relief package for northern flood victims.
Families who lost a member in the floods will receive at least Bt35,000 in compensation and Bt60,000 if the person lost was a breadwinner, deputy government spokeswoman Sansanee Nakpong said. Those injured will receive at least Bt10,000 each. The Labour Ministry will ensure survivors find jobs for 30 days at Bt145 a day, while the Agriculture Ministry will pay farmers for ruined farmland and crops, depending on the extent of damage and type of crop. Soft loans will be made available for those who need to restart a business or farm. Those who lost their homes can have new ones built for Bt30,000 each or they can build their own and get reimbursed up to Bt60,000. Repairs of government offices will be funded from the budget. Sansanee said teams must work closely with the Budget Bureau before any reimbursement.
