Bomb explosion kills two soldiers in Yala

Yala - A bomb blast and ambush killed two soldiers on Wednesday as the violence continued unabated in the deep south.
In Bannang Sata district of Yala, Sgt Maj Jarewat Khamnoey, 45, and Private Mongkhon Prasuk, 21, were found dead on the roadside in Soi Muang Village yesterday afternoon. Investigating officials said that the two soldiers, who were assigned to escort teachers, were riding a motorcycle to pick up teachers at Nikompattana 13 School, when an unknown number of suspected Muslim militants set off an explosive device and ambushed the two with automatic weapons. The militants also put spikes on the road that connect Krongpinang and Bannang Sata district to delay any assistance to the two soldiers. Government officials are among the main targets of the ongoing insurgency in the three southernmost provinces. More than 1,300 people have been killed since the violence reemerged in January 2004.
