Court accepts Suwarot's graft lawsuit

Southern Bangkok Criminal Court yesterday accepted a lawsuit filed by former Democrat MP Suwarot Palang accusing the election commissioners of corruption.

In the suit, Suwarot accused EC chairman Vasana Puemlarp (a police Lt-General), Prinya Nakchudtree and Virachai Naewboonnien of malfeasance for refusing to endorse Chumphon Senate candidate Chatchai Palang - his younger brother - after Chatchai won the local Senate ballot.

The commissioners also practised discrimination, he alleged, by filing complaints against Chatchai accusing him of violating Article 44 of the Constitution - by defaming Prinya - without summoning Chatchai to give a statement.

Suwarot said his brother did not defame Prinya but just mentioned him during the election campaign.

The court scheduled the first hearing for July 31.
