TRT spokesman denies creation of new party

Thai Rak Thai spokesman Chatuporn Prompan yesterday denied that the party had registered a new party because of fears that the ruling camp would be dissolved.
Mahachon Party leader Sanan Kachornprasart earlier told the press he believed there would not be a general election on October 15 and that the Thai Rak Thai Party would be dissolved following an allegation it paid small parties to run in the April 2 election. "It is not true at all. No Thai Rak Thai Party members believe our party will be dissolved,'' Chatuporn said. Thai Rak Thai Party members do not want to defect to the Democrat Party as they believe the Democrats have no future, he said. Meanwhile, Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said a caretaker senator would today appear as a witness in a preliminary hearing in a libel case Suthep filed against the Election Commission. He said that if the court accepts the law suit, he would present additional evidence showing that a large party hired small parties to contest the April 2 election. Wichit Plangsrisakul, a legal specialist with the Thai Rak Thai Party, said the party would monitor all political groups that he said had joined hands with political parties in an effort to defame Thai Rak Thai. He said he would seek legal action against these groups. Another Thai Rak Thai Party legal specialist, Kuthep Saikra-chang, accused Suthep of seeking to destroy his party's reputation by implicating Thai Rak Thai in electoral fraud allegations. "He wants to defame Thai Rak Thai by revealing information to the court to arouse public attention,'' he said.
