Jealous killer held
Tak provincial police have arrested a Burmese national who worked for the United Nations in connection with the murder of a woman and her six-year-old son.
Maung Tan Maung, 26, confessed that he killed Chayanee Kanta, 26, and her son Puwanart on May 26 at her residence in Mae Sot district in a jealous rage after discovering she was seeing other men, police said. The suspect worked as an interpreter for the UN High Commission for Refugees in Tak, which has numerous border camps for Burmese displaced persons. Maung confessed to strangling Chayanee in her bed following a quarrel, police said. He confessed that he killed Puwanart to prevent the boy from identifying him as the killer, they said. After killing the pair he locked the house and fled to Burma, according to police. He was arrested when he returned to Tak. The bodies of the mother and son were found days later after neighbours alerted police that a bad smell was emanating from their house. Maung told police he earned a good income from the UN, so money was not a motive for the crime. Police yesterday escorted the suspect back to the victims' residence to re-enact the crime. They had to shield him from angry neighbours who tried to attack him.
