Suchon accepts decision

A day after the Supreme Court rejected a request from the Senate speaker to nominate Election Commission candidates, Suchon Chaleekrua said yesterday he would call a halt to the selection process.

In a press release, speaker Suchon accepted the high court's reasons for throwing out his appeal, which asked the court to nominate candidates under its quota.

In a letter to the speaker on Thursday, Supreme Court president Charnchai Likitjittha said the Supreme Court had denied Suchon's petition because it would not help redress the three remaining members' standing.

Charnchai said in the letter that the election commissioners were unfit for office because they were not politically neutral, referring to a Constitution Court interpretation. EC chairman Vasana Puemlarp told reporters he had nothing to say about the court's message.

Worajet Pakirat, a Thammasat University academic, criticised the Supreme Court for stepping beyond its purview under the Constitution.

He said the Constitution Court had ruled that the EC had illegally managed the April 2 election, but he did not mention that the EC had showed favouritism.

It is up to the Constitution Court to decide if the allegation is true, he added.
