Petition accepted

The Central Administrative Court yesterday accepted a petition from eight students who say they have been unfairly denied seats in Ubon Ratchathani University's medical school.

The students are on a waiting list and say that the school must enrol them because vacancies have come available.

"The university has violated its regulations regarding admission for qualified students," said their attorney Sukrit Kitisriworraphan.

As the semester begins on Monday the students requested that the court order the university to enrol them immediately, Sukrit said.

The school could accept a total of 70 students, he said, adding that it had admitted two students who resided outside its permitted areas.

However, Rector Prakob Wirojkoot said his university had the right not to take students in the queue. He said there were only 48 seats available and the school had already admitted 51 students.

Prakob said he suspected the students were not acting on their own volition but had been encouraged by someone to petition the court.
