Traffic police yesterday disclosed plans to accommodate the travel schedules of visiting royalty during the celebrations of His Majesty the King's 60th year on the throne.
Royal guests from 25 countries will be arriving from next Friday to Sunday at Bangkok International Airport and the Air Force airstrip and two routes have been planned for them, Traffic Police commander Maj-General Panu Kerdlappol said. After using the tollway, the first route exits at Phloenchit Road to take the guests to nine hotels in the area, while the other exits at the Surawong gate to access four Chao Phya riverside hotels, he said. To attend the official ceremony at the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall on June 12, guests at the Chao Phya hotels will travel via the tollway and use the Urupong exit, while those staying in the Phloenchit area go out at the Yommarat exit, then use Phitsanulok Road before turning right at Suan Misakawan intersection. For viewing the evening's Royal Barge procession on the Chao Phya River, the royal guests will use the same route from their hotels and turn left at Suan Misakawan Intersection, follow Rajdamnoen Nok Road and the Rama VIII Bridge, and then along Arun-Amarin Road to the convention hall at Navy headquarters. Each of the eight cavalcades will take up to 40 minutes and be tightly guarded with three police cars in front and back of each group. Police will clear all routes 20 minutes before the cavalcades set out, he said, and motorists are urged to avoid using the roads when the cavalcades are scheduled to depart. The exact times will be announced later. On June 13, the guests are scheduled to go to the Royal Palace, using the tollway to the Yommarat and Urupong exits, travel along Phitsanulok Road and turn left at Suan Misakawan Intersection into Rajdamnoen Avenue. While many of them will use the same route to return to their hotels, others will go to the airport to catch onward flights. Panu said he believed the traffic situation would be smooth as the government has declared June 12 and 13 as special holidays.
