A village chief gunned down in Yala

Yala - Violence continued in this southernmost province as a Muslim village chief was shot to death on Friday by suspected Islamic militants in a drive-by shooting, police said on Friday.

Samart Raying, 67, was gunned down while riding a motorcycle in the province.

Police beieved Samart was killed because he cooperated with authorities.

The militants hid a bomb beside his bullet-ridden body, but police managed to defuse it.

Local government officials, police, military are often targeted by Islamic insurgents but Muslims seen as sympathetic to the government are also attacked.
