Pollsters said yesterday that 52.8 per cent of the 4,167 people they surveyed in 21 provinces including Bangkok believed it was possible a large party would soon be dissolved. The Abac Poll said 31.7 per cent of those surveyed said it was impossible, while 15.5 per cent had no comment. The poll was conducted from May 22 to Tuesday. About 70 per cent said they had high expectations that the courts would help improve the political system, while 18 per cent said they did not have much faith in the courts to do so and 11 per cent had no comment. A majority, 58.3 per cent, said they believed the battle in the next election would be fiercer than in the last one and 25.4 believed said it would be as fierce as the one before the last election. Asked if caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra should keep his word and not return as prime minister, 57.2 per cent of respondents in Bangkok said "yes", while 42.8 said he should return as premier. Outside Bangkok, 44.8 per cent said he should not return as premier and 55.2 per cent said he should. Drugs, economic problems and violence in the South were the most urgent problems for the next prime minister to resolve, the survey found.
