Mahachon and Chat Thai dismiss rumour talk

A key figure in the Mahachon Party dismissed rumours on Friday that his party would merge with former opposition ally the Chat Thai Party, saying his colleagues had only discussed running campaigns for a new election.
"It is impossible in any conditions," Akaphol Sorasuchart said. "In recent meetings, party executives have only talked about how we will prepare for the election." He said he believed whoever had spread the rumour intended to make potential candidates feel uncertain about their future with the party and thus consider shifting to other parties that had courted them. "The Mahachon Party will field candidates," he said. Deputy Chat Thai leader Veerasak Khowsurat had no idea where the rumour came from. "It is not easy to merge the two parties," he said, adding that if it were to happen, each party would need to call a special conference to get a "yes" vote from its executives. The Election Commission would then pass the resolutions to the Constitution Court for approval. "Don't take the rumour seriously... It won't come true," Veerasak said. Before the House dissolution on February 24, Chat Thai had 25 of the 500 House seats while Mahachon had two. Agence France Presse
