Thailand on the Riviera

With Somsak Techaratanaprasert no longer president of the Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand, only a small contingent from the Thai film industry is headed for Cannes this year. Most have had to pay their own way, though some received partial sponsorship from the Culture Ministry.

However, Thailand wasn't completely out in the cold at the screenings, with one short film selected for the Cinefondation's parallel programme that showcases student productions.

Directed by Anocha Suwichakornpong, "Graceland" was filmed in Thailand and depicts a man who saves a mysterious woman from drowning and embarks on a spiritual journey with her. Anocha made the film while studying for her Master's at New York's Columbia University, where she majored in film.

Among the film companies with booths at La Croisette's trade mart were Somsak's Sahamongkol Films International, GTH fronted by Yongyooth Thongkongtoon and Five Star Entertainment with Apiradee Iampungporn.

Somsak also provided a special clip of Tony Jaa's new movie "Ong Bak 2" to tempt potential buyers.

The Thai troops supported by the Cultural Ministry were led by independent filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul who brought his "Utopia" project to the Atelier programme, which supports and raises funds for young talent.

"Utopia" is a co-production with DViant Films of Los Angeles and has already received a grant from the Hong Kong Film Financing Forum.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand funded the Thai Night event, which was moved from the Majestic Hotel to the very expensive Carlton. Rumour has it that the budget for the bash was ¤100,000 (Bt4.8 million). The event was aimed at promoting the Bangkok International Film Festival, as well as showcasing Thailand's beauty to La Croisette's visitors.
