Protest against THAI route cuts

The Khon Kaen Chamber of Commerce has protested against Thai Airways International's plan to cancel flights to unprofitable routes, including Bangkok-Khon Kaen.
Surapol Thaweesaeng-sakulthai, chairman of the provincial chamber, said THAI's plan to hand over the route to Nok Air and other low-cost airlines had caused concern. "The flights are nearly full but THAI said it's not profitable," added vice chairman Chokchai Khoonvasee. "Is it because too many seats are allocated to politicians?" - The Nation.
Kedah air hub Kedah aims to become the low-cost carrier hub for the northern region of Malaysia with direct flights to Asean countries by the end of this year. Kedah Industry, Transport, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Chinese Community Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Chong Itt Chew said that discussions were being held with AirAsia, Malaysia Airports Berhad and the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) on the matter. He said that among the destinations identified for the direct flights were Medan and Jakarta in Indonesia and Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand.
