Royal anniversary pins now on sale

Three million commemora-tive pins marking the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne will go on sale to the public at Bt100 apiece at a government-commissioned exhibition to honour the monarch from Friday until June 4.
The pin's front features the award-winning 60th anniversary emblem and its base carries a banner with the engraved date "June 9, 2006" - 60 years to the day since the world's longest-serving monarch ascended to the throne as the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty. The pins will also be available at the library of the Secretariat of the Cabinet Office inside the Government House compound. Profits from the sale of the pins will go to the Anantha Mahidol and Sri Nagarindra Founda-tions. Meanwhile, the Office of National Buddhism has submitted a request to the Cabinet for a raise in the monthly allowances for senior monks and a special allowance for all monks in temples in the violence-plagued provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. Abbots in all temples will have their allowances raised from Bt1,000 to Bt1,500, while monks in the deep South will be given Bt500 a month from an original rate of Bt100. The raise will take effect on October 1 and require Bt429 million already pledged by the Budget Bureau of Thailand. Piyanart Srivalo The Nation
