Mahachon 'lacks top politicians'

The Mahachon Party has expressed concern it lacks outstanding political talent to lead it into the next election.
Deputy leader Akapol Sorasuchart said yesterday that the party could be in trouble in the next election because it is missing an exceptional politician to lead members into battle.Akapol said the party was seeking new candidates, and that current party chief Sanan Kachornprasart was ready to stand aside for a leader with prime-ministerial credentials. The party wanted former Democrat Party deputy leader Supachai Panitchpakdi, who is currently serving as secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), to be its new leader. However, his term at the UN trade body has some time to run. Former Democrat Party secretary-general Pradit Patharaprasit was also mentioned by Akapol. But Pradit appears to have dismissed such a move. Mahachon recently lost former Ubon Ratchathani MP Tun Jintavej after he switched to the Chat Thai Party. Akapol played down this defection, saying Tun had not participated in party activities for some time. Akapol admitted the party must reinvigorate itself for the new poll. Mahachon did not want to be a major party as much as a sanctuary for disaffected voters. "If there is a new Election Commission, many who have left politics may return," he said. -
