Two resign from EC's Yimyaem probe panel

Two members of an Election Commission (EC) sub-committee investigating allegations the Thai Rak Thai Party paid small parties to run in the April 2 poll, submitted letters of resignation on Friday, a source said yesterday.
The sub-committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Nam Yimyaem, earlier submitted its findings and recommended that the leader of the ruling party be questioned about the scam. Tien Chonmaitree and Visit Sankhahaphol submitted formal letters despite an order by EC chairman Vasana Puemlarp for the panel to conduct further inquiries into the Democrat Party's allegations. Both cited stress as the reason for quitting, the source said. Tien and Visit were appointed sub-committee members by former Election Commissioner Charupat Ruangsuwan, who resigned last Monday. The source said it was possible that once Charupat resigned, the two men also decided to quit. The pair also may not have wished to look into the case further, he said. Thai Rak Thai considered Charupat "too close" to the Democrat Party, he said. With their resignations the sub-committee is left with 16 members.
