5-year plan for training logistics workers

Thailand plans to train 1.74 million workers for the logistics industry by 2010, the Thai Federation on Logistics said last week.
Techa Boonyachai, a representative from the federation, said the National Economic and Social Development Board and the federation in collaboration with state agencies had finished drafting a strategic human resources road map as part of the country's five-year logistics development plan. The plan, stretching to 2010, is subject to Cabinet approval. Out of the proposed 1.74 million workforce, 225,000 (100,000 new and 125,000 existing) will be supplied to industry, and 1.515 million (285,000 new and 1.23 million old) to logistics service providers. Most of the human resources to undergo training for logistics skills are drivers. One million drivers need to be shown how to drive safely, which is a means of reducing costs of industry. Thailand will have to pay more attention to drivers by issuing a higher standard for truck driving licences. Licensed truck drivers will receive higher pay. The development plan also calls for the establishment of a logistics institute to issue professional licences for the industry. Watcharapong Thongrung The Nation
