Scholarships for deprived students

The government is planning to hand out 400,000 scholarships to help low-income parents cope with mounting fuel bills.
"We are aware that the rising fuel price pushes up living costs," caretaker Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang said yesterday. He said these special scholarships, which will likely cost about Bt3 billion, would be granted this year only. The project would be financed by some of the proceeds from the government's two- and three-digit lotteries. "We are going to discuss the project in detail on June 19," he said. The main idea was that only students from low-income families could apply for these scholarships but they could come from any education level - from kindergarten to university, the minister said. "Students who already receive other types of scholarships will not be eligible," he said. According to Chaturon, the government's two- and three-digit lotteries have generated some Bt24 billion which is being used to fund many scholarship programmes.
