Alternative energy

Thirty-nine alternative energy projects worth Bt9.37 billion have been granted Board of Investment incentives over the past 12 months.
"Alternative energy such as NGV [natural gas for vehicles] is the government's ad hoc agenda to cope with skyrocketing oil prices," BoI secretary-general Sathit Charnchaokul said yesterday. As a government-promoted industry, alternative energy businesses enjoy maximum tax breaks on imported equipment and a corporate tax exemption for eight years. From April of last year to April this year, 39 projects were granted these privileges. Between January and April this year, 11 projects with Bt3.31 billion in investment, focusing on producing alternative energy and related products, have applied for investment privileges. The projects plan to produce both equipment used for energy saving, such as solar cells, as well as energy sources including biomass gas, gasohol and other fuels produced from agricultural materials. An energy service company is also seeking approval, the BoI chief said.
