Assistance for the North

The Fiscal Policy Office is enlisting economists at Chiang Mai University in a drive to strengthen the northern economy.
Director-general Naris Chaiyasoot said yesterday that his office would today sign an agreement with academics from the university to exchange economic information and opinions and conduct joint training. Close cooperation could lead to better economic initiatives and policy planning, Naris said. The office will today hold a seminar on the regional economy, when local economists and businessmen will be encouraged to talk about the office's involvement in the economic development of the North. The forum will also discuss how to strengthen the local economy to help it withstand the force of globalisation. Topics include management, finance, accounting and public participation in local development. Because Chiang Mai is the commercial centre of the North, the office wants to expand its role in assisting in its economic development, Naris said. Tourism is the city's main source of income. Naris also said the Finance Ministry would hold road shows in Hong Kong and Singapore from June 15-17. Wichit Chaitrong The Nation
