Politicians and representatives from anti-government and pro-democracy groups met yesterday at the site of a long-delayed memorial for fallen democracy heroes to mark the 14th anniversary of the Black May uprising of 1992.
Religious ceremonies were held in the morning at Santiporn Park, next to the Government Lottery Office. Among those attending the event were Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, caretaker Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang, and the five leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy. Representatives from democracy organisations called for the construction of the monument to be resumed after the foundation stone was laid two years ago. Apirak said the city administration would help in the building of the memorial to remember those killed during the 1992 pro-democracy street protests. Chaturon, who presided over the event, said by living up to the spirit of the uprising and learning from the past, people would help find a way out of the current political crisis.
