Sanam Luang to be rid of hawkers

Fortune-tellers, street hawkers and other sidewalk vendors will be banned from Sanam Luang and nearby areas from June 1, Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district director Rerngsak Horareung said yesterday.
He said officials will be told to get tough on hawkers and roadside vendors around Sanam Luang and along Rajdamnoen, Wisutkasat, Na Pralan, Maharat, Mahathat, and Sanam Chai roads - as well as the stretch from Phanphiphop Lila Bridge to Pinklao Bridge. These are all routes that international guests and tourists will take for the 60th anniversary celebrations of His Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej's accession to the throne, Rerngsak explained. About 300 street hawkers were told of the new enforcement three weeks ago, he said, and most understood the necessity and would look for new locations. Only a few insisted on remaining in the area, and the district would charge them according to the Urban Cleaning Act, with a fine of up to Bt2,000, if they have not moved by June 1, he said.
