Violence continues in Pattani

A police was seriously injured from a bomb blast and a villager was shot dead on Thursday in the latest separate development of the ongoing violence in the deep south.

A homemade bomb hidden under a police's pick up exploded on Thursday morning, injuring an officer.

Pol Sgt Maj Marooding Chetoh, 48, was parking his truck in front of his working place after dropping off his daughter at the bus station when the bomb exploded.

His right leg was broken and he was hurriedly sent to a local hospital. He remained in a intensive care unit.

Investigating officers said suspected Muslim militants most likely planted the bomb under Marooding's truck at night and aimed at attacking all police at the police station but the bomb went off too soon.

After the explosion, police surrounded the area but did not find any suspect.

In a separate attack, in Yarang district of the same province, a house painter Sanya Kabthong, 36, was found dead on the roadside of SayabeeYarang street Thursday morning, with three bullet casing lying around his body.

Police said Sanya was riding his motorbike to work when two gunmen approached him from behind and opened fire with a .45 pistol at his head and body. Sanya died at scene.

Police suspected Muslim militants were behind the attack.
