Registered migrant workers can stay till June 30

Burmese, Lao and Cambodian workers legally qualified to work here, plus their families, can remain in the Kingdom until June 30, following endorsement by the Cabinet yesterday.

Qualified workers are those registered and granted work permits two years ago. The Labour Minister will decide what to do after the employment deadline ends.

Deputy government spokesman Danuporn Punnakanta said the Cabinet also approved in principle a policy guideline to deal with around 500,000 job vacancies in industry and fisheries.

One option is to grant an amnesty to legal migrant workers to allow them to fill vacancies until March 30, 2007.

Another option is to import migrant workers from the three countries after Thailand signed an agreement with the three neighbours governments to legalise workers' residency in Thailand and prevent corruption and human trafficking problems. - The Nation
