Senators ask attorney general to intervene in EC's trial on TRT

A group of senators has asked the attorney general to intervene in the Election Commission's investigation of the alleged hiring of small parties by the Thai Rak Thai Party to contest the April 2 election.
They said they no longer trust the EC to probe further because the current EC lacks neutrality and fairness. The petition that was submitted to Deputy Attorney General Pranpan Naiyakowit was signed by five caretaker senators: Jermsak Pinthong and Kraisak Choonhavan, both of Bangkok, Niran Pitakwatchara of Ubon Ratchathani, Karun Saingam of Buriram and Somboon Tongburan of Yasothon. The petition referred to the result of an investigation by an EC sub-committee which alleged that the Thai Rak Thai Party of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra hired small parties to contest the April 2 election. The subcommittee recommended that Thaksin be invited to testify before the EC. The punishment for the charge would be the dissolution of the political party and a prohibition of party members from involvement in politics for five years. The petition claimed that the neutrality and fairness of the EC are in doubt and the commission could possibly try to protect the Thai Rak Thai Party. "So the claimants as senators whose duty is to protect the Constitution and the country ask the attorney general to intervene and further investigate the case and submit it to the Constitution Court for further action. The requested acts are allowed by the Constitution," read the petition. The Nation
