Police close in on thieves

Police yesterday summonsed a transvestite for questioning as they launched a manhunt for a third suspect in the burglary of a palace on Bangkok's Tanao Road, an officer said.

Police will also have archaeological experts verify whether items they recovered from transvestite Watcharin Kamolthip, 39, came from the palace. He said police were searching for a man known as "Dee", after questioning two suspects over the theft of more than 2,000 items from a palace belonging to Field Marshal Prince Nakornsawan Worapinit.

Metropolitan Police Commander Maj-General Pramot Pathumwong yesterday summonsed Watcharin, who had been arrested earlier this month on charges of conspiracy to steal. Watcharin claimed he bought the items found in his possession from suspect Amornthep Thasungnoen, who has been arrested.

But police believe Watcharin and Amornthep acted together, working as painters at the palace for almost a month to prepare for the robbery, the officer said.
